My recommendation is that if you need a long lens, get a long lens. I sometimes use the TC-20EIII with the 200/2 and again at f/5.6 the image quality is good, but the lens is very expensive. The 70-200/2.8 II can also take the TC-14E and it works well at f/5.6. With some lenses, TCs work quite well mostly these are the very fast and very expensive supertelephoto primes (starting from the 200/2). You also get reduced contrast due to the additional elements present. When you use a 1.4X TC you lose one stop directly and should stop down an additional stop to get good image quality. To be honest I most of the time prefer to just crop rather than use a 1.4X TC these days. A TC-14A should fit, if I recall correctly, either lens without modification but is manual focus only. I think a modified 14E will fit the 180mm however. With most 85mm primes the rear element of the lens would hit the front element of the converter and result in one or both components being damaged, so it is not advisable to try this. However, Nikon put the tab in there to prevent use on lenses for which it is not designed to be used. The TC-14E(II) can be modified to fit some lenses by filing off a tab from the converter.
